update

things have been up in the air a bit the last few months. i moved to a new apartment. it's great because it's bigger than my last place and offers an amazing floor to ceiling wall of mirrors in the studio/living room. i've been using it to tape up what might be finished pieces; my critique wall i guess. i've recently freed up all my time for drawing, research, formulating how to rebuild http://allanredd.com, and hence, taking a lot of photographs of new work for the site. it's going to be a busy autumn! keep checking back please. i will try to provide more updates more often.

I have moved

After 2.5 months of apartment hunting and about a month of settling in at my new place I am getting back to a point where I feel I can work again. It's time to set a new goal for the year.

detail

quick detail from one of today's drawings:

-- Post From My iPhone

slow start

it's been 24 days since i returned from amsterdam. i have had quite a bit going on with work and personal matters that has either gotten in the way or occupied my thoughts over creative thought. i've only gotten 2 drawings done in that time!

i did receive my batch of 40 sheets of new paper, all the right color of white. and today i finally was able to put pencil to paper and focus on the range of feeling i had while in the netherlands. i found myself intensely drawing sets of rectangles in repetition and motion with reflection. it's so important to me to approach drawing with high energy. finally i believe i built up enough to get going on this series. i'll post some partials and details in an upcoming post.

paper delay

ugh, so dick blick on bleeker st. packaged the wrong paper. i just opened the box at home and it was 50 sheets of stonehenge 90lb 22"x30"...but it was "warm white" (looks antique) not "white", like i requested. lesson learned though because i ordered the correct paper online and saved $22.00 ordering bulk. they don't offer you that pricing in the store. and even with my corporate 10% discount card i was still paying more than online.

so, new batch of paper doesn't arrive until the 20th. i guess it's going to have to be a good thing in the end. i'll have plenty of time to sketch, plan or draw on hand cut paper from my gigantic roll i bought 2 years ago...no problem. i am getting a full refund on the mistake.

new

yes i am ordering more paper!! i love meeting goals. i'm now beginning a new series. i'll explain a bit more as i make more progress. i can say though that i am using at least these three things as inspiration:

1. Amsterdam
2. Cy Twombly
3. Hundertwasser

New Drawings!

i have finally found uninterrupted time to upload 15 new drawings to allanredd.com. each were completed between Sept 2009 and today and are located in the set titled "drawings".

i have also found the time to add new sections called "sketches" and an "archive" for older drawings. i'm hopeful you enjoy. and as always i crave feedback of any sort!!

happy holidays! i'm going to Amsterdam!!!

groet,

allan

new images

i spent a couple of hours today photographing the 23 new drawings i have done since early october. i am very hopeful to have them posted to my website in the next day or so! these will all be abstract landscapes inspired by my trip to iceland last september. i can't promise that all of them will make the cut. but i will post as many of them that my inner critic will allow. more to follow... http://allanredd.com

tape

i'm beginning to play around a bit with masking tape. the 9B Lyras are so soft it's a useful way to keep areas clean.

10/30/2009

progress

i guess i have been busier than i thought lately. i've just begun the process of spraying all of october's drawings with fixative and i count 9 completed new drawings. it looks like i'll need another can of spray. even better news is i am on track with my goal to run out of paper by the year's end. 21 sheets left, 9 more weekends in the year, 2.3 drawings per week...no problem. i just ordered 20 more lyra 9b graphite crayons and bought 8 more staedtler erasures.

10/17/2009

photos

i'm getting too much done to photograph much right now....more later

10/13/2009

year's end

complete 3 24"X30"drawings per week by dec 31. on track, did 4 this weekend...100% sure about 3 of them.

new drawings

i've added 9 new drawings to allanredd.com today. i stared at my pencils for a half hour this morning and decided this would be better than staring at my pencils for another half an hour.

i also did some html maintenance in an attempt to make the site flow more easily, for all our benefit. if it weren't such a challenge i wouldn't mention this. but i am still learning how to make my own website function.

iceland note

i found some time for drawing during a bout of rain while at the beach in Vik, Iceland. here's one of what i am hopeful are many 7"x9" drawings i'll either begin or complete while in reykjavik this week. mostly i am in a frenzy of taking as many photographs as i can so i have a lot to work with when i get back to Brooklyn.

completed new drawings

i posted 3 new completed pieces tonight: http://allanredd.com

final detail 2

final detail 1

i decided, after looking at it from across the room for an hour or so, that the underdrawing needed some burnishing to round out the deeper parts of the stitching. this was where i did not know if i was finished or not.

i have idealized this dress for so long and who could wear it for me. when i first saw it, it was from afar on a stand, no mannequin. it was so perfectly lit it appeared to be suspended on air. for this i have centered it in the composition with no base, support or wearer.

in love with this dress i once saw

i began with a very light sketch and a lot of repetitive underdrawing. this is where i love the 90LB paper so much.

detail of what i believe to be a finished piece. it will need a lot of fixative in the morning before i go out. this one got very glassy towards the end.

darkening my favorite parts always takes me away.
closer, this stage always produced loads of erasure crumbs which i love.

initial markings. did this part to a very nice drumbeat.

full glare at an angle. we'll see where this goes. planning a photo shoot for a sunny weekend up and coming to post finished work.
